Extremely Rare Pair of Pricket Candlesticks

ca 1550 - 1600

Thisrare pair of candlesticks is of a type that was used in the sixteenth century for domestic (altar) use. This particular pair is finely detailed and may have been cast by a silversmith rather than a brazier in view of the remnants of silver below the base.

These types of rather ornate candlesticks have been in use in Germany, Holland, Italy and England but a precise casting location cannot be established. If these sticks were originally made by a silversmith they might have been made in Nuremburg, Germany, famous for its silversmiths.

The candlesticks are cast in four separate sections: the pricket, the upper drip pan, the stem, the lower drip pan and the base. The stem is peened over into the base.

The candlesticks are about8.5 inches tall and have a base of about3.5 inches in diameter.

The candlesticks are in excellent condition for their age. They do exhibit normal wear and tear. The underside has traces of silvering with a possible silver repair.
