Opening Of Santa Fe Trail 150th Sterling Medal Franklin Mint Nmhs:
This is a Sterling Silver commemorative coin/medal commissioned from the Franklin Mint by the New Mexico Historical Society to note the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Santa Fe Trail.
The medal is still enclosed under plastic in the original unopened card from the Historical Society. The card reads "Solid Sterling Silver/Proof/SCI-36." It was purchased from a coin dealer who had an inventory number of "69-V-10" on it so I'm assuming he dated the release to 1969. It measures 1 1/2" in diameter and I would guess that it's about a Troy ounce (based on the weight of a similar-sized Walking Liberty one-ounce silver coin).
The card that the medal is packaged in measures 2 1/2" X 3 1/2" and includes a separate card noting the significance of both the date and the Santa Fe Trail. The dealer's label (white adhesive label 1 1/4" X 5/8", not shown) is affixed to one side of the card. For the sake of provenance I did not attempt to remove it.
Thank you for looking!
