An original 1886 chromolithograph print by French artist Jules Auguste Habert-Dys (1850 – 1924) from Fantaisies Décoratives, lithographed by Gillot (French, 19th century), published by J. Rouam (French) , Paris. There were 48 plates in the volume/folio, this is Plate #27, \"Douze motifs pour plats et assiettes.\" (title is not on print) translated \"12 patterns for dishes and plates.\"  Amazing number of creatures in this print, center bird on branch has a cat looking down on it from circle above, a white hare or rabbit is bottom center, storks and many other birds, sheep, frogs, strange fish and sealife as well as plants/botanicals.   His work has to be viewed up close to experience the extreme detail and really lovely printing.   Often considered Art Nouveau I think the work stradles the Aesthetic period and Victorian decorative arts in general.   Much gold is used in this print.  It is one of the more complex designs from this folio.

Overall it is in great condition for it\'s age and would frame beautifully.  No holes, tears or spotting on the lithograph.  Cream paper (looks toned around borders) lithograph is mounted on original heavy ivory paper.  Some fading no doubt in coloring due to age but hard to say how much-reads excellent.  The ivory heavy paper has surface soiling and some spots along the edges, light wear along edges in general.  I think some of the surface soiling could be removed with an eraser before framing if desired.  Purchased unframed from a local estate.

Measures approx. 12-1/2\" x 17-3/4\", lithograph approx. 8-3/8\" x 12\".

Here is a good description of the lithographs from a 2009 exhibit of the Fantaisies Decoratives at the Tides Institute and Museum of Eastport, Maine :

\"By 1886, Habert-Dys was a well-respected designer and illustrator, but the main problem for him, in terms of posterity, is his subtle style. Without seeing the originals, his work is not striking enough to attract attention and no reproduction can do justice to the delicate, beautiful, details and colors that he incorporates into his designs. The Fantasies Decoratives, published in 1886, was a one-year project with forty-eight lithographs issued in twelve parts. The colored gravures, many containing gold, were printed on \'papier du Chine\' by noted lithographer, Charles Gillot (1853 - 1903), whose work was so respected that his lithographs were called “Gillotypes”.

\"The intricate patterns, featuring birds, animals, flowers, fish, insects, shellfish, and frogs, were designed for ceramics, plates and dishes, textiles, wallpaper, vases, and jewelry. In these exquisite creations, Habert-Dys adopted many elements of Japanese influence (Japonisme), which reflect the late nineteenth century’s fascination with Japanese art. The Fantasies Decoratives also contain elements of line and curve that later became an intrinsic characteristic of the next major movement in the art world, Art Nouveau.\"
