Original American Revolutionary War Engraving Molly Pitcher Battle Of Monmouth For Sale
Original American Revolutionary War Engraving MOLLY PITCHER Battle of Monmouth
Original antique steel engraving showing Molly Pitcher loading her husband's cannon at the Battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778.This dramatic illustration was engraved by James Charles Armytage and printed more than 150 years ago. It is based on a painting by Alonzo Chappel that captures a colorful story from the American Revolutionary War — the heroic action by a woman delivering water to Continental soldiers during the battle when her husband fell wounded and she took his place at his cannon.
After the battle, General George Washington issued her a warrant as a non-commissioned officer, and she was thereafter known by the nickname "Sergeant Molly". Her story may be regarded by many historians as more folklore than history, but Molly Pitcher is a familiar name to all and her bravery is an inspiration to many.
The image area of this engraving measures 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. It was published by Virtue & Company, New York, 1861 in Battles of America. The engraving is dated 1859 in the lower margin. The scans below give a closer look at some of the detail:
The Battle of Monmouth was fought on June 28, 1778 as British forces under Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton were making their way from Philadelphia to New York, across New Jersey. American Continental troops and militia were under the command of Major General Charles Lee. The outcome of the battle was virtually a draw.
Condition: This engraving is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips or tears. It is printed on a heavy stock and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
