Original Antique 1861 Black Slave & Overseer Lithograph *contraband* Sheet Music For Sale
This is the "Contraband" Schottische. Composed and Respectfully Dedicated to Maj. GenL. B.F. Butler by Sep. Winner. It waspublished in Philadelphia in 1861 by Lee & Walker. The cover was by Thomas Sinclair. This is the sheet music and is6 pages.
In August of 1861 the Confiscation Act was passed, which “permitted the seizure of property being used to pursue actions against the union, including slaves.” This act was inspired by Union General Benjamin F. Butler, who declared that captured Runaway Slaves to be the Contraband of War.
It measures about 13 1/2 x 10 inches. There is some light foxing to the pages and slight darkening. It is disbound from a book, but not loose from each other. There is a split at the top of the pages between 4 and 5 where ther are coming loose. Page 5 shows heavier foxing than the rest.
