Original Civil War Period Copper Canteen:
$350.00

For sale is this original Civil War period copper canteen. It is app. regulation size at 3 pints and has a wonderful never cleaned patina. The screw cap is marked \"Pat;d March 3rd 1858\" around the perimeter. The mark is faint but there. This is actually a easy canteen to authenticate. The primary indicator is the presence of the \"striations\" in the surface of the copper. The technique for rolling thin metal changed almost at the end of the civil war because of a cheaper easier process. These marks virtually guarantee an ante-bellum time period of production. The zinc cap also set up a galvanic reaction to the copper and the lead solder have combined to produce salts and corrosion that is non-fakeable. The patina of the copper when in hand is time produced and there is no chemical induced ageing to the piece. Although I can\'t say for sure it is Confederate it has every indication of pre- 1860 production and was probably produced as a militia canteen. There is no odor of mineral spirits or chemical inside. It is simply a very rare early American canteen that would be a great addition to your collection and is sure to be agreat conversation and research project.
