Original Jimi Hendrix Shrine Auditorium Concert Poster Rick Griffin Aor 3.68:
It was going to be difficult for Rick Griffin to top his “Flying Eyeball” poster for Jimi Hendrix’s February shows at the Fillmore Auditorium and Winterland Ballroom in 1968. He did his best to top it with this commemorative poster for Hendrix’s shows one week later at the Shrine Auditorium. Although John Van Hamersveld designed the concert poster used to advertise those shows, Griffin made his own poster after the show. Using themes from other drawings, he crafted an intricate asymmetric image with almost illegible font. Even though it was printed after the show, it has become a highly collectible Griffin/Hendrix poster, making it into the Art of Rock as plate 3.68.
The poster, measuring 14” x 22”, is on uncoated paper stock. The original printing of this poster has a much darker blue than later reprints. This 1st printing poster, printed after the show, does not have any pinholes, rips, or major creases. The top right corner has a very light bend, only noticeable to the touch. This minor blemish is the only issue, which is very minor. It is a highly collectible poster – one of the greatest artists, Rick Griffin, designing a poster for one of the greatest performers, Jimi Hendrix.
