ORIGINAL Vintage 1950s Signed MAORI Hand Carved Wood Box by P H LEONARD Paua Product Description
ORIGINAL Vintage 1950s Signed MAORI
Hand Carved Wood Box by P H LEONARD
ORIGINAL Vintage 1950s Era (or Earlier) Carved Wooden Maori Box with Label of Noted Carver P. H. LEONARD
Origin: New Zealand.
Description: This is a GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC period Maori wooden box with carved face featuring paua shell inlay eyes made in the 1950s era or earlier. This is a souvenir reminiscent of traditional waka huia and papa hou Maori treasure containers. (See this link for more on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waka_huia .) A very similar box sold on here: Please note the similarity of this label with the one sold on in the link. They are almost identical with the name and address being scratched out in my label. However, you can just make out the top of the letters in "P. H. LEONARD" in my label. The paper label has a tribal man's face, "TAPU", and "GUARANTEED GENUINE MAORI HAND CARVED", and a pen inscription "E 262" in the margin.
P. H. Leonard (born c1900) was a well noted Maori carver, elder, and was Director of Rotorua Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in the mid 1960s. Read about him here and here
More Maori boxes by this carver are found on the internet. See another example here with a valuation of about $200:
Markings: Paper label with inscriptions noted above.
Dimensions: Box is in 2 pieces -- a base and a detachable lid. The box is 4-3/4" long x 3-5/8" wide x 2" high.
Condition: As-found, near-perfect vintage condition. No breaks, cracks, or damage to the wood. Label has scratched out portion as noted above. Interior of the box has a perfumed smell like something perfumed was stored in it -- only noticeable when lid is removed. See photos.
