Dick Ruhl (1926-1991)was a native of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Dick was only a child and was in the thirdgrade when his teachers and his family took notice of his skill and interest indrawing cartoon characters. He graduated High School at the very early age ofjust 15. In 1941, he departed his home town for California where he attendedthe Choulinard School of Art in Los Angeles. It was the Disney Artiststhemselves who were teaching at the school who selected him to be one of thestudent animators at Walt Disney. His skill in drawing Donald Duck inparticular brought him great fame in the 1940\'s at the studio. He was declaredthe fastest duck animator at the studio and could draw Donald Duck in less thana minute. Dick Ruhl became very well known for drawing Mickey Mouse and DonaldDuck during the “Disney Golden Age” of the 1940s. Dick retired from Walt DisneyProductions in 1960 and moved to Richardson, Texas to be closer to family.During his retirement years he worked oncartoon commercials for several large companies such as General Mills. He alsotaught animation classes in some of the surrounding schools. Althoughfamous for drawing Mickey & Donald, he could draw any of the Disneycharacters as all illustrators at Disney were required. However, Dick Ruhl hadhis own special technique in drawing the Disney characters. He developed hisown technique using pastels. Dick Ruhl passed away in June 1991 while living inRichardson, Texas.
