Ornate Antique Steel Sewing Chatelaine
English * Circa 1880s
This cut steel chatelaine is decorated with faceted steel "gems" and has 3 matching chains with sewing attachments. The tools include a disc style pin cushion, a thimble bucket and thimble and a folding pair of chatelaine scissors. The scissors are 4 1/4" long when folded and they have a push button mechanism to open. They have tight blades, sharp points and cut like new to the tips.
The thimble is an early Dorcas thimble by Charles Horner. It is sterling silver over a steel core and is in the diamond pattern. It is about an American size 7 (14.5 mm diameter opening) and is in excellent condition. The steel has some discoloration but a large amount of the original polished surface remains. The overall condition is excellent and it measures 16" from top to bottom. The waist plaque sparkles like diamonds.
