The last and the latest subject in which the Virgin appears alone without the Child is that entitled the \"Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin\" and sometimes merely \"THE CONCEPTION.\" There is no instance of its treatment in the earlier schools of Art but itwas one of the most popular subjects of the Italian and Spanish painters of the seventeenth century.
19th Century oil on canvas, minor repair as seen verso. Minor paint loss lower right corner , approximately ¼” . Otherwise this marvelous painting is in good condition. Rich in religious symbolism: snake, apple, lily, crescent moon, halo with stars. Unsigned as many of these masters were done for the greater glory of the church.
Dimensions unframed are 34” x 22”, and in the newer frame the dimensions are 38 ½ “ x 26 ½ “.
