P1831 British General Infantry Officers Mameluke Sword Saber:
P1831 British General Officers Mameluke sword saber
Blade length = 785mm, (30.90”)
Blade width at Ricasso = 29mm, (1.14”)
Overall sword length = 923mm, (36.33”)
Blade is salt & peppered but no pitting
It has a pronounced curve & flares out to a quill point with the back edge being clipped.
Engraved both sides with the crown & queen Victoria’s cipher.
As well as folage, a stand of arms of a marmluke sword crossed over a cannon barrel.
Just above the ricasso is the suppliers name & address which reads:
23 OLD BOND ST
Engraving is slightly faint but is clearer toward the hilt.
The brass hilt also has the same stand of arms in its centre of the Mameluke sword & cannon barrel.
The grips are in an elephant devived material.
The grips have two rivets going through the whole handle.
These riveted areas are covered by small round brass caps.
One side has these caps, but they are missing on the obverse side.
At the end of the grips is a brass lined hole for the sword knot to pass through, this un-screws.
The brass centre to the handle must have taken a slight knock at some stage as it does not quiet line up with the grips, it has been pushed forward.
An easy repair to correct.
The grips are in great condition & made of a substance that derives from Elephants.
(But on I'm not allowed to say what it is, but being that this item is pre 1900 it should not be an issue).
Slight hairline age cracks exist on both, but they are both intact, in great conditionwith no chips.
Blade & hilt are nice & tight with no looseness.
The scabbard construction is in brass.
One of the hanging rings remains the other is missing.
By the looks of the patina the second ring has been missing for a long time as there are no shadow marks to the scabbard as evidence to its previous existence.
The scabbard has a blotched type appearance & has a few minor dents near the shoe.
Likely from stepping in & out of carriages & having the scabbard caught in a closing door.
Blade is nice & firm in scabbard.
Overall in wonderful condition & has looked great on my wall for a number of years.
