THE PATCHIN REVIEW was edited and published by Charles Platt. Originally a science fiction journalist, his confrontational approach soon made him controversial. So much so that Harlan Ellison, who contributed to the first issue of this small press publication, eventually became an outspoken critic and antagonist of Platt's. With the first issue, Platt described his publication as THE UNIQUE AND CONTROVERSIAL GUIDE TO SCIENCE FICTION (later changing that to THE INSIDE GUIDE TO SCIENCE FICTION). It's goal seemed to be to question thesatus quo while searching for what was truly literate in science fiction beyond the normal action/adventure tropes.
