Fine Pair of French Louis XVI Style Bergere Arm Chairs
Early 20th Century JAMESTOWN ROYAL FURNITURE COMPANY Peach and Neutral colored feather down stuffed cushions w/FRUIT WOOD CONSTRUCTION by
JAMESTOWN ROYAL FURNITURE COMPANY AND SOLD LOCALLY AT C. & R. Cousins Furniture Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma (firm est. 1880 through about 1950s))This is a simply wonderful pair of very fine Louis XVI Style bERGERE arm chairs, each remarkably well crafted and precisely carved. The frames have deep and intense rope carved embellishments flowing around the entire perimeter, the arms flowing straight outward from the curved back into tight pinched handholds. These handholds are unique interpretations of the Louis XVI style, curled incisions along each side, deeply acanthus carved arm supports locking the arms in place. The cushion is deep and comfortable, the silk upholstery stuffed with 20% white feather down and 80% white goose feathers. One chair has a scratch on the right front leg and the other chair hassimilar scratch on the left front leg, I think would cover easily with a wood stain pen. These chairs have been very well cared for over the years and obviously not exposed to a great deal of light as the fabric is in wonderful condition with very rich vibrant colors, not faded. There are no tears in the fabric and I do believe it to be the original upholstery and it seems to be still in very good condition.
There is a sticker on the label that reads '1 cent 383 tax, Oklahoma Dept. of Health and 'JAMESTOWN ROYAL FURNITURE, JAMESTOWN, N.Y. MOSS COTTON FELT, CUSHIONS 20% WHITE GOOSE DOWN, 80% WHITE GOOSE FEATHERS, SOLD BY C. & R. COUSINS FURNITURE, TULSA, OKLAHOMA'
I have dated them by the rare 1 cent tax sticker on the label. It seems the sticker itself is an asset and a rare one in excellent condition. I cannot say precisely when the chairs were made but this tax sticker, from what little information I could find may have been in existence from 1880-1926 or so, so we are talking around 100 years old. It's as if someone placed these chairs in an area of the home that was rarely or never used except for their gorgeous appearance because these chairs are in great shape and ALL ORIGINAL. You won't come across this opportunity again.
This is a remarkable pair for anyone passionate about French decor looking for exacting standards and utmost quality in their furnishings. THEY ARE EACH 34"X31"X34".
