PR C1860 FRENCH LIMOGES BISCUIT WARE PORCELAIN FIGURAL VASES BY HENRI ARDANT NR
Thislisting is for a beautiful and stately pair of circa 1860 French Limoges biscuit ware figural porcelain vases by Henri Ardant & Company. The vases measure 17 ½ inches or 44.5 cm high and are 7 ½ inches or 19 cm at their widest.
The vases feature a tall footed base in a deep cobalt blue with applied gold highlights. The bodies of the vases have a hand painted cartouche at the center with a domestic scene of a mother and her children. Around this is a heavy applied gold border on a black ground. Sitting on the shoulders of the vases are two dark haired women wearing flowing robes and holding castanets in their hands. Below the women is an elegant swag of laurel leaves wrapping around the top of the vase. The neck of the vase is tapered and flared at the top rim in a deep cobalt blue. The bottom of one vase is signed “HA & CIE”, this is for the Limoges porcelain manufacturer Henri Ardant (1828-1883). The company made biscuit ware, and Ardant was noted for his artist productions.
The condition is as follows; one vase has an old repair to the bottom of the body where it meets the base. This has been repaired with a metal rod, porcelain and repainted, and does not take away from the piece. The other vase is in excellent condition. Please see the many photographs.
