Pre-civil War To Civil War Period Non Regulation Sword W/ Orig. Leather Scabbard For Sale
Up for sale we have a very Scarce, Pre-Civil War to Civil War Era Non-Regulation Sword which we "think" was made by the Horstmann Company for a State Militia "Artillery" Officer. Now, there are no maker marks or inspections marks on the sword. We also "think" this was for a "Artillery" State Militia Officer because there's MANY "Cannons" Etched on BOTH Sides of the blade. There's FAR MORE Cannons within the etchings then anything else, and far more then what we have seen in any book or on any regular Non-Regulation Sword, but since we have no documentation thatspecificallystates it was a for a Artillery State Militia Officer, we can only speculate and let you buyers decide. If you have the book, "Civil War Army Swords" by John Thillmann, then please turn to pages 416 - 418 so you can read the info stated about the "Horstmann" Non Regulation Swords. Also, there is a picture of a documented Non-Regulation Sword made and assembled by the Horstmann Company per the book, which was used by a Confederate Captain from NC. That sword has the same style scabbard throat as ours and then if you turn the page to 418, you'll see what the book describes as "THE SECOND SWORD" and it too is made by the Horstmann Company and it shows the Sharkskin wrapping like ours has above and most importantly, the Blade Etchings almostresembleours identically, EXCEPT, ours has more cannons and swords etched within itsdesigns. Also, a very important detail mentioned within those pages, which we took pics of above so you can read them straight from the book; is how it states the Horstmann company had their blades with the FLAT BACK, which was ETCHED as SELDOM SEEN ON OTHER MAKER'S EXAMPLES. With are sword having exactly that, meaning the ETCHED, FLAT BACK, this is another reason we believe the Horstmann Company made this sword. Again, we can only speculate this without maker marks, so will have to let you experts decide out there. Another very Unique detail, is both sides of the Blades etchings are NOT IDENTICAL..........each side has DIFFERENT Etchings throughout. I'll try to describe the best I can here. FIRST SIDE, starting atRicassoand working towards the tip has: Mortar Cannon, Reg. Cannon, Swords, Drums,Foliage, and Flags working into a Dolphin style Dragon normally seen on Navy swords or quillions of Naval Swords, with what appears to be a Cannon at the end of its tail with cannon balls and then LOTS of foliage, then that foliage works into a shield, Cannons, drums, swords, trumpets, several flags with Pikes on the ends that works into lots more foliage that wraps around atrumpetor something with flames coming out the end with more foliage all around. Now, this isn't all the designs within the blade etching, but it is the majority to give you better idea and alletchingsare VERY CLEARLY seen with NO issues what so ever. SECOND SIDE, starting at Ricasso and working towards the tip has: Large shield with what appears to be a Lion face within it, Drums, Reg.Cannon, Bowls, Trumpet, another Shield it appears with an "X" across middle then a Knights style Helmet on top, Numerous flags, Foliage and that works into more Foliage with fancy designs, Flags, and what appears to be trumpet with flames coming out the end and smoke then that works into more foliage with Crossed Cannons over top an ENTIRE Knights Body Armour and Helmet with more Flags, then a bowl or drum, trumpet, then the rest is LOTS of Fancy Foliage. Again, this Not "all" the designs, but the Majority of them to give you a better idea and ALL Etchings are VERY CLEARLY Seen with NO problem what so ever. I truly can't Express enough how AMAZING the Etch work is on both sides of this blade, but its truly amazing and I know our pics above do them no justice what so ever. All etchings are raised to the touch. Again, the Blade has a FLAT BACK with its Back Etchings spanning from the Brass Guard ALL THE WAY TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BLADE! This foliage etching is raised to the touch as well. There is also several battle nicks to the sides of the flat back and all of them have the same uniform patina within them as the rest of the blade. The Leading Edge or Cutting Edge has Never been sharpened and retains Numerous battle Nicks throughout, which all have the same uniform patina within them as the rest of the blade. The blade is Straight and as shown above, a small portion of the Tip has been broken off. Webelievethat took place within the War because the Patina WITHIN the break is Uniform to the rest of the Blade. Both sides of the blade have a uniform patina throughout. As shown above, the Brass Hilt has a uniform patina throughout with fancy designs throughout. The Quillion End of the brass guard has been broken off and we believe this took place within the war again as the Patina WITHIN the break is Uniform to the rest of the Sword. There is a little movement to the Brass guard / knucklebow. About a 1/8 of an inch side to side, so not a lot. The Sharkskin Wrap is all there and very firmly intact. As shown above, the Single Copper wire has came undone at some point before it came into our hands, but its still attached at the guard location, so we believe this could be an easy fix if one wanted. The copper wire is still under the Pommel cap where it goes over the sharkskin wrap as well. So, all the wire wrapping is present. Now, we believe this to be copper wire due to its reddish color as you can see in the pics above, but maybethat'sjust patina and its actually brass....we think its copper but will leave up to you experts. As shown above, the Tang has been Peened on the pommel end and it has Never been altered in anyway. The brass guard and pommel cap still retain some Gold gilding. Both have a beautiful, uniform patina. This sword does retain its Original Leather Scabbard with Brass Dressings as shown above. The Leather scabbard is all there and in Solid condition. All stitching is present on the reverse side and there's no breaks, holes, etc. We see No markings what so ever to the Brass Dressings. Leather is well worn as shown above, but again, VERY Solid throughout with no tears, breaks, holes, etc. All 3 brass Dressings have a BEAUTIFUL Reddish Patina throughout as shown in the pics above. They also still retain some Gold Gilding. Both brass rings are firmly secure to the brass mounts. The bottom Scabbard Tip is VERY WELL WORN on its end showing LOTS of usage from dragging the ground an there's several nicks, etc and ALL of them have the same Uniform Patina throughout showing nothing done recently by any means. The only down fall to this scabbard in our opinion is the MIDDLE Scabbard Mount slides back and forth WHEN PUSHED, not on its own. This is a VERY EASY fix if one wants. OVERALL MEASUREMENT IS 35 1/8 inches long BLADE ALONE MEASURES 29 1/4" inches long BLADE WIDTH AT RICASSO IS Little OVER 1 1/8" inches wide. When we purchased this sword many years ago from a Virginia Family, they insisted it was used by their Confederate Ancestor....HOWEVER, we have ZERO Documentation to prove that. Therefore, since the book mentioned above states BOTH SIDES used these swords throughout the Civil War Era, and you can read this within the pics above, we can only leave any further decision's up to you as to who used it. In our minds, nothing can be proven Confederate without supporting Documents or something specifically with the Swords Make. We can't pinpoint anything within the sword that proves itsConfederateused, therefore, we have to assume it was used by either side as the book states. This is an AMAZING piece of History that exhibits LOTS OF Actual Usage which we believe ALL came from the War Period due to the Patina having the SAME UNIFORM Patina throughout. Of course, we'll leave that up to you experts as your the ones offerding on it. I don't think you could EVER find a sword with BETTER & More UNIQUE Blade Etchings throughout both sides, unless you find one that will cost you a small fortune. I believe the new owner will be MORE Then impressed with this piece and we are offering it here with a sale!!! We also can't say if this was made BEFORE the Civil War or DURING as the book states they were made before and made and used throughout the Civil War Period and again, you can read this within our 2 pics above. One things for sure, this would def. been used during the Civil War Period and everything about it suggest that. We feel it was Horstmann Made Sword per all the info we shared and showed within our pics above, but without maker marks, we have to leave that up to you ITEMS SOLD ON OUR SITE CAN BE RETURNED IF WE MISREPRESENT THEM OR THE BUYER IS NOTCOMPLETELYHAPPY WITH THEM UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED WITHIN THE ITEMS LISTING SUCH AS ON CERTAIN ELECTRONICS, ETC.
