Rare PrimitiveAmerican Made, Hand BlownBottlewith pontil mark and applied lip.
From the 1870--1880 period.
Used as either a medicine and/or a smallflask for spirits.
In remarkably good condition considering its age and travel.
Measures slightly over 6" to the stopper's tip -- 3" wide and 2" deep. Holdsslightly less than 12 fl. ozs.
Removable stopper fits snugly -- bottle has no chips or cracks.
Bottle was a giftto the seller in 1967from an Episcopal missionary whobought itin an apothecary shop in Nanking, Chinain the early 1920's. The proprietor of the shop told the missionary he had acquired it from an American sailor "a long time ago" and decorated it himself through the opening at the top of the bottle. The missionary was convinced this American madebottle most probably had traveled from the U.S. to Nanking on amerchant ship in the 1870's or early 1880's.
