PRINCIPIO IRON WORKS MARYLAND 24 POUNDER CANNONBALL, WAR OF 1812
This War of 1812 American 24 pounder cannonball was made by the Principio Furnace/Iron Works in Cecil County, Maryland for the U.S. Army & Navy. Many of the cannons on the U.S.S. Constitution were made here!
It is in good condition with light pitting & has a dark It is the one on the left in the picture, the other one is a 12 pounder cannonball also made by the Principio Furnace/Iron Works. This listing is for the 24 pounder cannonball only not for both cannonballs.
It came from the Becker Collection of Maryland artifacts & comes with a Becker Collection letter.
The Principio Iron Works were started here in 1719 by Joseph Farmer and an Ironmaster, John England who made it one of the most successful in the colonial ironworks by the 1740s. Thomas Russell, Jr., England’s successor, produced cannonballs for the Continental Army & navy during the Revolutionary War until it was destroyed by the British on May 3, During the War of 1812, the British fleet sailed up the Chesapeake Bay & landed at Poole’s Island, Harford County on April 24, 1813 & established as a staging point for British raids.
OnMay 3, 1813 the Skirmish at Havre de Grace, Harford County theBritish defeated the local Maryland Militia then burned town &destroyed Principio Iron Works, Cecil County, Maryland.
