Pair Dutch Speculaas Plank Hand Carve Mold Christmas German Gingerbread Cookie:
For your consideration, a lovely pair of Dutch Speculaas wooden molds. One mold is a women, and the other a man. Both are wearing a traditional costume. Speculaas are Dutch and German (Speculatius) spice cookies that are traditionally made at Christmas. This tradition goes back many centuries. The wooden molds are carved in bas-relief, in the shapes of St. Nicholas, men and women in traditional dress, windmills, and assorted other shapes. Historically these molds were carved by wood carvers who made their living crafting these fine pieces. These carved molds were first introduced to America by Dutch settlers who emigrated to the East Coast. Families treasured their speculaas molds, and passed them down for many generations. Even as metal cookie cutters gained in popularity, the molds were still treasured, and hung on the wall as decoration. These two molds are in excellent vintage condition. They have holes on the backs to hang, however they are fully functional if they are seasoned with some oil. This is a wonderful pair. Each mold is 13" long, 4 1/4" wide, and 3/4" thick. Christmas is around the corner! Don't miss these molds this year. I have a large personal collection of these molds that I will be thinning in the next several weeks.
