Pair Superb Antique English Samplers By 2 Sisters - Circa 1837 & 1841 For Sale

Am pleased to present at sale this remarkable pair of antique English samplers.Name age and date of the young sistersare stitched on bottom of each sampler. Edith Burgess and Mary Burgess, at age 11 years in 1837 and 1841 respectively. Verses appear across the top.Samplers are similar in needle work design, color,framingand size but are not identical- so they complement each other beautifully.

They havefortunately survived side by sidetogether over 170 yearsand rightly deserve to stay together.

Both needle worksdisplaymeticulous attention to detailalong with thesophisticated workmanship and wisdomoftwo veryyoung girls.

Samplers sharethe following vivid colors- deep red/rose, pink, green, brown, blue.Colors areamazingly vibrant - rarely seen in works this old.They have different decorative geometric floral and leaf bordersthat are complimentary. Other designmotifsthey share are-floral bouquets & baskets, birds, butterflies, trees, figures, reclining lions andfoliage. Adam & Eve areunderan apple tree reaching for an applewith aserpent wrapped around thetree trunk. Images areexquisitely detailed on linen with various stitches.

Classic and handsomeEnglish birdseye mapleframes with gold insertsdisplay these extraordinary works of art beautifully.

EDITH - MEASUREMENTS:

Outer - 16" wide x 24 3/4" high

Inner - 12" wide x 20 3/4" high

MARY - MEASUREMENTS:

Outer - 17" wide x 24 3/4" high

Inner - 12 1/2" wide x 20" high

CONDITION:

Overall condition of each sampler and frame is excellent. There are a few verysmall scattered holes(please see last picture)- but these in no way detract from themasterful craftsmanship of these special works of art.
