Pair Of 17th C Oil On Panel Dutch Italianate Oils Signed Cdh For Sale
A good pair of seventeenth century oil on panel paintings in the Dutch-Italianate style. They are well painted and highly stylized with an emphasis on lighting rather than detail. The painting with the shepherd piping is signed on the tomb "CDH" followed by a tiny uppercase F which stands for Fecit or "painted it".I have been unable to figure out who the artist is but they are very similar to Karel Dujardin and a few other Dutch artists working in Italy in the seventeenth century.A fragmentary old label on back of one appears to read "Pieter de Laar-Bamboc_ _ _" which is a reference to Pieter van Laer-Il Bamboccio.Van laer was one of the first Dutch artists in Rome to paint common or lowlife subjects and they are very similar to his work. There are also references to the name "van Lindt, van Lyn and Hans van Lyn" along with old sale or inventory numbers and Austrian export stamps. The paintings measure 7.75" x 10.25" and are in very good condition. There is some old gilt on the edges and very little restoration that I can discern. They have a varnish that made them difficult to photograph and are much nicer in person. Most likely they were conceived as a pair as the horizon lines and backgrounds line up when placed side by side.Shipping is free.
