Tall bird / red orange breast - Height - 3.25" (8.3 - 4.5" (11.5 cm)
Short bird / brown & gray - Height - 3" (7.5 - 5" (12.7 cm)
Fine pair of Austrian cold-painted bronze song birds made by Franz Bergman (1861–1936) of Vienna Austria.
Circa 1900 - 1920.
The taller bird with the red-orange breast is signed under it's tail with Bergman's raised "B" in an urn-shaped cartouche mark (painted over - see photos). The shorter brown bird appears to be unsigned, however it is also by Bergman and this pair were bought together from an old estate collection in San Francisco. I believe they have been together ever since they were first bought in the early 20th century.
Both birds are so life-like that they look like they will start moving any minute!
Generally good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: The taller bird with the red-orange breast has a soldered and re-painted repair in the area where it's right leg meets the body. The repair appears to be well-done and is not readily apparent unless inspected closely. Light wear and small losses to the painted surfaces, overall. The colors are still bright and rich, and the birds have developed a nice old patina to the surfaces.
