Pair of Japanese Kutani bottle gourd vases c1910

An exquisite pair of Kutani bottle gourd vases c1910, each bearing generic Kutani character marks to the bases.

Late Meiji (1868-1913) period. There were several hundred kilns operating in Isikawa ken.

There are a vast number of indifferent kutani porcelain vases. These however are simply exquisite and decorated by a master artist. Famous kilns often did not identify their work and just used the generic Kutani characters. An expert can identify the famous kilns from the quality of the work. The delicacy of the lines and brush work is of the highest standard. Delineation between the panels and the orange ground is precise and sharp and the gold over decoration is intricate. The overall balance of the design is superb. The shape is a transition from a straight bottle vase to a gourd vase.

Condition:
Vase one: has had restoration where the neck has been broken. The join is barely noticeable (see photographs). This same vase also has a couple of places where the orange has been scuffed and the gold scroll decoration is faded at the top of the neck.
Vase two: has no damage. There is a small firing fault to the foot and very minor scuffing to the orange at the base of the vase.

Please examine the photographs carefully to see the skill of the work.

Vase one: Diameter at broadest: 11.2cms. Height: 24cms. Weight: 435gms.
Vase two: Diameter at broadest: 11.1cms. Height: 24cms. Weight: 445gms.
