Pair of highly ornate antique miniature Satsuma vases, sharply detailed and hand painted with fine gilt brushwork These two heavily gilded pieces are 2 5/8 inches in height. Both are nearly identical except in reverse. Each has four scenes around their circumference. They are exquisitely decorated with Immortals on one panel and a golden-kimonoed Geisha in two others. One vase has a scene which depicts the emperor with 2 seated warriors and a geisha. The other vase has a panel which depicts 2 seated warriors and a geisha. Signed with the Shimazu family crest (circle with a cross) and below that Satsuma (the last character is apparently abbreviated), they are from the Meiji period (1868-1912). There are no chips, cracks or repairs.
