Pair Of Vintage Japanese Carved Wood Foo Dogs Komainu World War Ii War Souvenir:
This is a pair of beautiful old carved wooden Foo Dogs, brought back from Japan at the end of World II as "war souvenirs". They are at least as old as WWII, but I'm guessing they are older than that. They are both about 3" tall, 1.5" across the front, and 2.25" long. I'm not sure what kind of wood they are carved from, but it has a reddish tinge, so it might be cherry wood. The carvings are beautiful and nicely detailed, and both are in good condition. They may have been attached to a larger piece at one time, as they each have a hole in the bottom for a nail or pin. Foo Dogs, also known as komainu, are an ancient part of Japan's tradition. They are meant to ward off evil spirits, and are used as guardian lions of shrines and temples.
