Papal States Pius Vii Coin Silver Grand Tour Souvenir Ram’s Head Spoon For Sale
Offered is a 19th century Grand Tour souvenir of Rome. It is in the form of a spoon, with a bowl formed from an 1800 Papal States 1 scudo coin commemorating Pope Pius VII. The handle of the spoon features Etruscan Revival decoration of applied beads and twisted wires, and ends in a nicely detailed ram’s head. The side of the coin inside the bowl features a papal mitre and crossed keys above an oval papal crest, the reverse an image of Mother Church among clouds. The outside of the bowl is fairly worn, but the inside of the bowl retains some fine detail. These spoons were souvenirs of the Grand Tour in the mid to late 19th century, and this is an unusually large and detailed example. Measures 5 3/4” (14.5 cm) in overall length. Weight 39.5 grams.
