Peru Manuscript 1757 Spanish Colonial, 110 Pages; Capellania De La Petronila:
Old document dated 1757, Spanish Colonial Peru manuscript, 110 pages total, with 108 of the pages all handwritten. The first two pages are done in black ink, while the remainder of the manuscript is in light brown ink. The paper is in poor condition, as expected for the age, with frayed edges all around. The size is 8 1 / 2" x 12 3 / 8". The pages are actually size 17" wide, but they arefoldedin half to make a limp binding. The pages are bound by cord. The pages are still supple, and you can leaf through this manuscript without it falling to pieces.
The first page appears to be vellum, with writing “Capellania de la Pegtronila de Basti das” in dark black ink.
The second handwritten page appears to be a summary of the document. This is also in black ink, with large lettering.
The third page features a letterhead, with two stamps to the left and words printed across the top. The top of the page has a symbol, followed by “Un quartillo. Sello Quarto, un quartillo, anos de mil setecientos cinquenta y dos y cinquenta y tres…para los anos de 1757 y 1758. There are two pages like this; the other is buried midway in the document.
The writing appears to be an early form of Spanish, with writing on both sides of each page. There are about 20 lines of handwritten text per page, on the average. Except for three pages, everything is in light brown ink. The bleed-through is not that bad. There are also initials on every other page. I don't know what this manuscript says. There's a mystery waiting to be discovered! The photos show the first six pages and the last six pages.
The final page is signed by several people, and this condition is the poorest of all pages. This page has a few holes where the ink has bled through on the signatures.
