Enamel Christmas Robins Thimble, Birmingham 1975
Sterling silver thimble and enamel thimble made by James Swann & Son of 25 Hylton Street, Birmingham and hand painted by British artist Peter Swingler. The thimble depicts two ovals with robins on twigs with holly and berries on a cloudy blue ground. Presumably made as a Christmas thimble. The thimble is signed by the artist and is hallmarked under the crown: 7 (the size), JS&S (for James Swann & Son - letter 'J' unclear), the Birmingham Assay Office anchor mark, the lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter script "A" for 1975.
The thimble is in perfect condition - in round and free of all damage. Height approx. 2.2 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.6 cm; weight 6.7 grams.

I am indebted to an er and silversmith who writes as follows about the above Swingler thimble: Hi there. Thought you might like to know that this is a Bullfinch. I make silver thimbles and we used to supply Peter with some and he did us a few painted ones in return. His work is superb and he did do one of this picture for us about 5 years ago. He doesn't do any for us now as he is pretty well retired but I still have the last 3 he did for us in 2010. Good luck with the sale.
