THE 1552 VELLUTELLO EDITION OF THE COMPLETE POETICAL WORKS OF PETRARCH, TITLED ‘IL PETRARCHA’ AND COMPRISING HIS COMPLETE SONETTI, CANZONIERE, AND TRIONFI (SONNETS, CANONS AND TRIUMPHS), printed in quarto at Venice by Gabriel Giolito Ferrari in 1552 (according to the colophon page – the woodcut title bears the earlier date of 1547, the woodblock having been reused for the 1552 edition), BEAUTIFULLY ADORNED WITH NUMEROUS WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS, INCLUDING A GLORIOUS ARHCITECTURAL TITLE PAGE, A FULL-PAGE MAP OF THE SITE OF VALCLUSA (AVIGNON, ETC) NUMEROUS WOODCUT INITIALS, AND A VIGNETTE ILLUSTRATING EACH TRIUMPH, complete in all respects, in very good condition internally, bound in 19th century vellum, AND AUGMENTED THROUGHOUT WITH VELLUTELLO’S IMPORTANT AND COPIOUS COMMENTARY. The volume may be referenced as Brunet IV at 551 and as Essling 106

PROVENANCE: 1. In the 17th century and probably much of the 18th, the book belonged to the ancestors and descendants of Pietro Monaco, whose evocative mid-17th century manuscript account from memory of dates of the passing of family members appears on the verso of the final leaf. It is entirely possible that this Pietro Monaco was an ancestor of the famous 18th century Italian artist of the same name. 2. At some point during the 18th century one Gioseppe Coccia came to possess this volume. His signature appears on the woodcut title.

Needless to say, the poetry of Petrarch constitutes one of the monumental achievements of poetry in the annals of the literature of the world. Petrarch’s Laura is enshrined forever, with Dante’s Beatrice, as the ideal of feminine beauty and virtue in the middle ages and the Renaissance. Appropriately, Petrarch’s poetry has provided the model for literary beauty in the western world since its composition in the 14th century. His perfection of the Sonnet form created a model that has never been matched for its influence or elegance, and that has been emulated by almost every poet of significance in almost all Western languages since Petrarch’s time.

Alessandro Vellutello (b. 1473) was one of the great literary scholars of the late Italian Renaissance. He remains famous for his commentaries on Petrarch and on Dante, both of which established new standards for their subjects.

The full title reads as follows:

“Il Petrarcha / Con L’Espsitione d’Alessandro Vellutello di Novo Ristampato con le Figure a i Triomphi, et con piu cose utili in varii luoghi aggiunte. / In Vinegia Appresso Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari / MDXXXXVII [1547].”

The colophon  reads as follows:

“In Venegia Appresso / Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari e Fratelli. / M D LII [1552].”

The volume is in very good condition internally with generally clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The woodcut illustrations and initials are excellent impressions throughout. The architectural border of the woodcut title is trimmed slightly at the outer and lower margins. The lower outer corner of the second leaf is restored without affecting the text. The poems on page 141 have been censored (scored through) by a 17th century inquisitor. The final leaf shows a repaired tear in the gutter margin, not affecting the text. Its upper outer corner has been restored, requiring the replacement of some text (the outer column of numbers in the closing table of contents) in 18th century manuscript. Generally, this is an appealing example of a very beautiful book.

The volume measures  cm by  cm by  cm; each leaf measures about  mm by  mm. THE VOLUME IS COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS. It is foliated as follows: [8], 216.
