Phantastes By George Macdonald - Handmade Leatherbound Edition For Sale
This book, C. S. Lewis said, baptized his imagination:
“In the depth of my disgraces, in the then invincible ignorance of my intellect, all this was given me without asking, even without consent. That night my imagination was, in a certain sense, baptized; the rest of me, not unnaturally, took longer. I had not the faintest notion what I had let myself in for by buying Phantastes.”
Phantastes is a tale about wandering and discovery, about finding one’s way when the destination is unclear. The hero Anados (from the Greek, both ‘pathless’ and ‘ascent’) searches for Ideals: Ideals of beauty and manhood, heroism and mystery; he comes back, though, having gained nothing, only losing his shadow—that grasping, hungry part of him which dims and distorts everything it touches: “Indeed, my ideal soon became my life; whereas, formerly, my life had consisted in a vain attempt to behold, if not my ideal in myself, at least myself in my ideal.”
George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish writer, poet and minister. His literary works, most notably Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin and Lilith, proved influential amongst the greatest writers of the late 19th and early 20th century, including Mark Twain, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.
