Photo 1st Transcontinental Rr: Golden Spike Ceremony Promontory Summit Utah 1869 For Sale
By 1848 the United States had acquired official title to the land stretching westward to the Pacific, south to the Rio Grande, and north to the 49th parallel. Americans had long since explored and settled in many of these areas, but now legitimate US possession created an impetus for development and migration there.
Private citizens and Government officials took the recently developed camera on their western adventures to record nature's curious sights and the marks that they as men and women made on the landscape.
Our new category:Classic Views Of The Old West
brings marvelously rare and adventurous glimpses of this unique time in American history...Locomotive Union Pacific #119 is at the right while Central Pacific’s #60 aka ‘Jupitor’ is at left during the ceremony for the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869.The Golden Spike was the ceremonial final spike driven by Leland Stanford to join the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. The railroad essentially connected Sacramento, California to Omaha, Nebraska, which in turn was linked to the already existing railway network of the Eastern United States, thus connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States by rail for the first time. A good view. Many of our views have found their way into lecture halls, museums, art galleries, publications, and ordinary homes throughout the world. These photos of the old west are usually quite sharp, balanced and detailed with excellent clarity but since photography was in its infancy at the time these black and whites were taken and most are well over a century old, it would be unrealistic to expect every image to be perfect in every way. This new Black & White Print of the
original archive is on Heavy Premium Glossy Photo Paper, Large 11" x 8.5"
