Photo: Rare Sepia: Red Star Line’s Rhynland, 1888 :
-Red Star Line’s SS Rhynland, 1888- Built and launched on March 10, 1879 at the Barrow Shipbuilding Co. in Northwest England for the Red Star Line Co, this is a wonderful view of the SS Rhynland at sea.
The Rhynland made its maiden voyage from Antwerp to New York on June 10th 1879. In 1895 she was chartered to the American Line and started sailing between Philadelphia and Liverpool. She was sold to Italy in 1906, renamed Ryyna and scrapped shortly thereafter. One of her more notable passengers was Irving Berlin, listed under his birth name of Israel Beilin. He and his family arrived on the SS Rhynland from Antwerp, Belgium (year unknown). The Red Star Line Co. was a joint venture between the International Navigation Company of Philadelphia, and the Société Anonyme de Navigation Belgo-Américaine of Antwerp, Belgium. It merged into the International Mercantile Marine Co. (the Parent Co. of White Star Line) in 1902.
In the city of Antwerp, the old warehouses of the Red Star Line were recently landmarked and will reopen as a museum in 2012 by the City of Antwerp. The works of art of the Red Star Line emigrants made by the Antwerp artist Eugene Van Mieghem (1875-1930) will be exhibited there next to Red Star Line memorabilia of the collection of Robert Vervoort.
