Picture Locket Antique Victorian 12K Gold c1860 Rare Wedding Jewelry 2 of Pair
A MAGNIFICENT JEWEL - A RARE EARLY VICTORIAN PICTURE LOCKET IN 12K GOLD WITH ORIGINAL FAMILY DAGUERREOTYPE IN A BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED LOCKET OF SUBSTANTIAL SIZE DATING TO C1860 - A RARE AND WONDERFUL LOCKET.
This is a magnificent estate jewel!!! Absolutely the finest quality.
The solid 12K gold Victorian locket is extremely rare and wonderful. In all the years of looking for wonderful lockets this is one of the best and most desirable I have come across! The locket is 12K gold. It is adorned with the most beautiful engraving of a hillside village scene on one side and a cartouche on the other. The village scene on this locket is different from the other one in the pair. The cartouche has the space for a message or monogram to be engraved if desired. The rim of the locket has absolutely beautiful deep acanthus leaf form engraving which extends on to the bale. The work is absolutely superb!
The locket contains the original daguerreotype photograph on one side of a gentleman. These are very rare and can be removed and replaced with your own photos if desired. On the reverse there is no photo. Also the original glass cover appears to have been replaced with a perspex cover and this is not secured in the locket. The locket opens and closes securely on both sides. The locket dates to the Victorian period, c1860. This is one of a pair of lockets which most likely came from the same family. A rare find!!!
The condition of the locket is truly extraordinary with really no dings or dents. As mentioned above one of the glass covers appears to have been replaced with a perspex or early plastic cover which is not secured in place. A truly wonderful period jewel!!!The locket comes from a very fine estate collection of lockets. Please see our other sales for more lockets from this estate.
The locket is in superb period condition. There is no apparent damage to the gold. The locket is 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) in diameter not including the bales. With the bales it is 2 1/2 inches (63 mm long). It tests for 12K gold. The locket weighs 34.1 grams without the loose perspex cover.
This is a stunning antique jewel with great drama and style. The combination of the extraordinary classic gold work the stunning design is mesmerizing. Together they create a jewel worthy of the finest collection. It is so immensely wearable either during the day or at the most glamorous affair. Treat yourself or a loved one to a treasure to cherish for generations and one which will only increase in value over time!
This sale is only for the 12K Picture Locket. We do have the other from the pair available in another sale.
