OFFERED WITH is A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE IMPORTANT 1612 EDITION OF THOMAS NORTH’S GREAT TRANSLATION OF PLUTARCH’S LIVES INTO ENGLISH, printed in large folio at London in 1612 (with a  part-title dated 1610), beautifully bound in early 17th or century English calf gilt, contemporary to the time of publication. NORTH’S TRANSLATION OF PLUTARCH IS ONE OF THE MASTERPIECES OF ENGLISH PROSE AND WAS THE PRIMARY SOURCE FOR SHAKESPEARE’S ROMAN PLAYS, INCLUDING ANTONU & CLEOPATRA, TITUS ANDRONICUS, AND JULIUS CAESAR. THIS 1612 EDITION WAS THE FINAL EDITION OF NORTH’S PLUTARCH PUBLISHED DURING SHAKESPEARE’S LIFETIME. Plutarch’s Lives is itself one of the most important works in the Western literary tradition – a fundamental source of wisdom, pedagogy and literary style for almost 2000 years. The present edition is illustrated by 20 finely engraved portraits of important figures (in the later lives), as well as by portrait-medallions throughout. The fine engraved title (dated 1656) is present and is quite a nice example; ‘The Frontispiece Explain’d’ is also present.

AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1612 EDITION OF NORTH’S PLUTARCH, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SOURCES FOR SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS AND A MASTERWORK OF ENGLISH PROSE IN ITS OWN RIGHT, ADORNED WITH NUMEROUS PORTRAIT MEDALLIONS AND ENGRAVED PORTRAITS. THE DEFINITIVE ENGLISH EDITION OF PLUTARCH’S LIVES AND THE LAST EDITION PUBLISHED DURING SHAKESPEARE’S LIFETIME.

The full title reads as follows, and provides an excellent description of the contents:

“The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romaines, Compared Together by that Grave Learned Philosopher & Historiographer Plutarke Of Chaeronea: /  Translated out of Greeke into French, by James Amiot Abbot of Bellozane, Bishop of Auxerre, one of the Kings privie Counsell, and great Almner of France: With the lives of Hannibal & Scipio African: translated out of Latine into French, by Charles de l’Escluse, And out of French into English, By Sir Thomas North Knight. / Hereunto are also added the Lives of Epaminondas, of Philip of Macedon, of Dionysius the elder, tyrant of Sicilia, of Augustus Caesar, of Plutarke, and of Seneca: with the lives of Nine other Excellent Chieftaines of warre: collected out of Aemylius Probus, by S.G.S. and Englished by the aforesaid Translator. / London, / Printed by Ricahrd Field. / 1612.”

A further part-title for the ‘Lives of Epaminondas, of Philip of Macedon …’ is dated 1610 and reads as follows:

“The Lives of Epaminondas, of Philip of Macedon, of Dionysius the Elder, and of Octavius Caesar Augustus: Collected out of good Authors. / Also the lives of nine excellent Chieftaines of warre, taken out of Latine from Emylius Probus, by S.G.S. / By whom also are added the lives of Plutarch and of Seneca. Gathered together, disposed, and enriched as the others. / And now translated into English by Sir Thomas North Knight. / Imprinted at London by Richard Field. / 1610.”

The volume is complete in all respects and is paginated [16], 1244, [32]. The volume collates A8, B-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Zzz6, Aaaa-Zzzz6, Aaaaa-Ooooo6, Ppppp8. The volume measures  cm by  cm by ; each page measures about  mm by  mm.

The volume is in excellent condition internally, with generally clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The engraved portraits and portrait medallions are excellent impressions throughout. There is only occasional light toning or very minor marginal wear. Early 17th century sheets from a Bible in English were used, in by the binder in the early 17th century as endpapers. The title page shows some creasing, which remains fairly unobtrusive. The final leaf of the index is laid-down, with the upper outer corner torn away causing loss of text. Generally, though, the volume unusually pleasing internally and externally.

The volume is finely bound in early 17th century English dark brown calf, contemporary to the time of publication, with the spine also dating to the time of publication, and with some slight 19th or 20th century restorations at the corners. The spine is divided by raised bands into 7 compartments with a gilt lozenge in the center of each compartment. A large gilt central lozenge also decorates each board. The boards are further adorned with gilt and blind-tooled filet borders, with floral cornerpieces. The binding is solidly in very good to excellent condition, with a strong book-block and strong hinges. The binding shows minor wear at the edges and corners, as well as minor scuffing of the boards.

In all, A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE IMPORTANT 1612 EDITION OF THOMAS NORTH’S GREAT TRANSLATION OF PLUTARCH’S LIVES INTO ENGLISH, printed in large folio at London in 1612 (with a  part-title dated 1610), beautifully bound in early 17th or century English calf gilt, contemporary to the time of publication, complete in all respects, constituting ONE OF THE MASTERPIECES OF ENGLISH PROSE AND WAS THE PRIMARY SOURCE FOR SHAKESPEARE’S ROMAN PLAYS, INCLUDING ANTONU & CLEOPATRA, TITUS ANDRONICUS, AND JULIUS CAESAR.
