Powers Smoking Pipe Corperation Pipe W/ Ash Shield, Circa 1934.(timothy Powers)s:
This is averyunusual item. The patent was issuedNov. 27, 1934.
It offered several features relly uniue for it's time.
It has asliding ash shield on the top. It slid back for loading and forward for smoking if so desired. The idea of the shield was two fold. When the shield was engaged thepipe could be put into your pocket and the ashesor Tobaccowere self contained and did not mess up your clothing. Also, it could be engaged when smoking and the ashes would not fly out in the wind or while driving with your window down. The shape of the pipe was designed to sit on a flat horizontal surface without tipping or spilling. (A most remarkable innovation that I wish I had had in my 60's smoking days driving with the window down!) The pipe is wood with what appears to be a standard hard plastic stem that screws in and out. The stem has a small crack in the neck, nothing serious. It has overall finish wear, which is to be expected for it's age.
