Treasure of the Concepcion
"On July 23, 1641 the "Nuestra Señora De La Pura Y Limpia Concepcion" set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico in a flota of 30 ships. Since there had been no shipment of precious metals the previous year, the Concepcion carried an exceptionally lard treasure cargo. While negotiating the Florida Straits, the fleet was caught in a violent hurricane which scattered and sank most of the ships. The 600-ton, 135-foot Concepcion later rammed onto the treacherous Abrojos Ree, some 80 miles northeast of Hispaniola, now the Dominican Republic. Despite the valiant attempts to save her, the ship soon broke up on the coral and sank.
On February 20, 1687, a Boston sea captain named William Phips, with the financial backing of King James II, discovered the legendary Concepcion after one unsuccessful attempt. They recovered a total of 37,500 pounds of Spanish reales, 27,500 pounds of silver bars. The vast majority of treasure remained beneath the sea.
Two hundred and ninety-one years later, on November 28, 1978, Burt D. Webber, Jr. like Phips at the time of his discovery, a 36 year-old American on a British Flag vessel, rediscovered the Concepcion after a disappointing and fruitless first expedition. The second Concepcion Find yielded a magnificent treasure including this silver 'Piece-Of-Eight.'"
