Pre-wwii Art Deco Hannukkah Menorah, Fulda Germany, Wilhelm Rauscher, 1920s:
PRE WWII FULDA GERMANY, ART DECO MENORAH, BY FAMED WILHELM RAUSCHER, (1864-1925)C. 1920, HOF & DOMGOLDSCHMIED.
A terrific piece !!! Art Deco @ 1920s Menorah. This particular piece bears the maker's mark and full textual identifying mark of famed goldsmith and jeweler, Wilhelm Rauscher, of Fulda Germany. His commissioned works for the Vatican are stunning. Standing 10" tall, 9" wide, it features a woven Star of David at pinnacle, 8 holders that are each removable, and the 9th a rotating removable shamus. The base forms a hexagon and features a raised relief starburst typical to the DECO period design of these menorahs. The piece has no identifying silver marks, but the body appears to be silver at least in tone, and as mentioned there are gold time remnants. Wilhelm Rauscher's history leads me to believe this is a mixed media piece. A book was published about his works: Der päpstliche Hofjuwelier, Hof- & Domgoldschmied Wilhelm Rauscher in Fulda (1864-1925)Although this piece is in used condition, structurally it is sound. Much of the gold, or gold tone is worn away, and there are marks on the base. This is a very rare piece of Judaica from a man best known for his commissioned works for the Christian church. The piece is also marked DEP. Please feel free to contact me with questions!
