November 22, 1963 was one of the most memorable andfateful days in the history of the United States. President John F. Kennedy wasassassinated in Dallas, TX. His body was returned to Washington, D.C. and anunprecedented period of national mourning began. His casket was laid in theEast Room of the White House then moved to the Capitol where hundreds ofthousands of mourners paid tribute to him. He was buried at Arlington Cemetery.

At Jacqueline Kennedy’s request, the East Room wasdraped in black mourning fabric to replicate Abraham Lincoln’s funeral. Mrs.Kennedy asked the White House upholsterer, Larry Arata and his wife Norma, todo the honor. They spent the entire night of Nov. 22 completing the task.

This small piece of black cambric fabric was used inthe draping of the East Room. The Aratas preserved the material afterwards as areminder of this sad historic event. The original piece that this was cut frommeasured about 2.5 x 3.5 inches and came with a note from Norma Arata.

The small ½”x ¼” piece of black funeral draping is laid on a copy of a photo taken in theEast Room on Nov. 23, 1963. It is enclosed in a crystal clear lucite displaywhich can be opened if desired. The display measures about 5.5 x 3.5 inches andis ½ inch thick. The display and piece of fabric that you will receive may vary slightly from the one in the listing but is roughly thesame size.

Along with the display is enclosed a 4x6 cardexplaining the history of the fabric and showing the original piece that thiswas cut from.

The card is in a clear plastic protector.
