President Millard Fillmore - Document Signed
Partly printed DS as President, signed "Millard Fillmore," one page, 12.375'' x 15.75'', July 14, 1851. A document appointing Samuel John Gower as the Consul of Austria for the port of San Francisco. Signed at the conclusion by Fillmore and countersigned by Secretary of State Daniel Webster. In Very Good condition, with borders trimmed, separations in vertical folds (reinforced on verso), small horizontal tears at center, and some toning with chipping. Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 - March 8, 1874) was the 13th President of the United States (1850-1853) and the last member of the Whig Party to hold the office of president. As Zachary Taylor's Vice President, he assumed the presidency after Taylor's death.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Satisfactory evidence having been exhibited to me that Samuel John Gower has been appointed Consul of Austria for the port of San Francisco, in the State of California, I do hereby recognize him as such, and declare him free to exercise and enjoy such functions, powers and privileges as are allowed to the Consuls of the most favored Nations in the United States. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I have caused these Letters to be made Patent and the Seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington the 14th day of July, A.D. 1851, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the 76th. By the President Millard Fillmore
