Quality 19c Chinese Export Deeply Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Shaped Vase W Handles For SaleFor sale is a good quality late 19c Chinese export cinnabar lacquer shaped vase executed in deep relief with ear handles and in a rich red color. This vase was produced in Canton, China during the last quarter of the 19c or around the c1880s to c1890s and was most likely exported to the West. This is one of my personal favorite type shapes of all the cinnabar vases having slow sweeping outward lines from the mouth to the middle section denoted with a horizontal line wrapping around all four sides then slowly sweeping inward lines from the middle to the foot with again two more horizontal lines denoting the bottom of the main section and the foliate section just before the foot. The vase is also one of the few styles that have a pair of handles which are referred to as 'ears' and the main carving theme to the top section is foliate designs with centralized lotus flowers on a geometric ground performed in deep relief from the build up of most likely 200 to 300 individual coats of lacquer. The main lower section has the front and back carved with figural scenes with trees, mountains and rockery on a ground with 3 separate geometric treatments to one side and the reverse has another three figures with the addition of a waterway and bridge while both sides contain designs of two different flower groupings. The inside and underneath are finished in traditional black lacquer. Condition is excellent with just minor surface wear to the cinnabar having one side with the pine tree has a gap in a area of the geometric background and was filled in but very insignificant and hardly noticeable without close scrutiny and then a few flakes to the black lacquer under the foot along with some black lacquer off on the very top metal lip otherwise great. Sizes: Height 10-1/2" x Width 5" x Depth 3-3/4". A wonderful piece of 19c Chinese cinnabar for the collector.
