Queen Elizabeth Ii Signed Golden Jubilee Letter & Provenance - No Reserve For Sale
I am in the process of selling a
small private collection of Royal Memorabilia – please see my other items. I am
not a dealer, but was lucky enough to obtain some very uncommon items formerly
in the possession of a member of the Royal Household that give a rare and
fascinating insight into the running of the palaces and the interchange between
the Royal Family and its retinue of staff. This kind of original ephemera seems
to be advertised on and elsewhere for incredible sums, so it is very
difficult to determine their true value. Consequently I am posting them with NO
RESERVE and will let the “market” decide their worth.
Offered without reserve is a typed and signed “thank you” letter
from the Queen to the Lord Chamberlain on original, watermarked, A4 sized
notepaper with a raised Royal Crest and Buckingham Palace motif. This item was originally listed several weeks ago, however the buyer bought a number of items and opted not to proceed with this particular purchase. The letter
reads as follows:
“To the Lord Chamberlain
I am most grateful to the Royal
Household and Private Estates, past and present, for my Golden Jubilee gift
which has been presented to me. This beautiful silver gilt bowl will always be
a reminder of this memorable year and I hope that you will pass on my thanks to
everybody for their generosity.
May I also thank all members of the
Royal Household and Private Estates at every level for the huge amount of hard
work which is being undertaken during this Jubilee summer, and especially in
the run-up to and during the Golden Jubilee Weekend. I know that many of you
have been working extraordinarily long hours on all sorts of arrangements in
recent weeks and that there are many more events yet to come. I would like to
take this opportunity on behalf of both Prince Philip and myself to express our
appreciation for all that you are doing.”
The letter is signed “Elizabeth R”
and dated 6th June, 2002. The Golden Jubilee events of that year
celebrated the Queen’s fiftieth year on the throne and were indeed numerous.
The Queen’s signature is almost certainly "autopen" (most of the Queen’s unofficial correspondence is, with any hand-signed versions being retained by the Palace archives).
The letter is accompanied by two pieces of additional provenance material – a
black and white photocopied photograph of the actual gift (which is magnificent
– someone in the Palace has good taste!); and a memo from the then Lord
Chamberlain, Richard Luce, (Richard Napier Luce, Baron Luce, Lord Chamberlain
to H.M. The Queen from 2000 to 2006) thanking contributors to the gift.
This is an original letter from Buckingham
Palace, A4 size, in excellent condition and a wonderful historical document.
There is a horizontal fold where the letter was placed into a palace envelope
(not present). There is a slight indentation from a paper clip (now removed)
that held the letter, photograph and memo together. It is likely that all of the members oftheRoyal Household involved in the Golden Jubilee celebrations received a copy of this message. Items will be sent in a
reinforced envelope with the letters contained in a conservation grade PVC
folder. Please see the photos, which form a part of the description, for more
detail.
Good luck if you decide to offer.
This would make an incredible addition to a Royal collection – and would look
marvelous framed with a photograph of the Queen from the Golden Jubilee year.
