Queens South Africa Medal To 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers Taken Prisoner 1900 For Sale
A three bar Queens South Africa Medal correctly named to:- 2238 PTE.J.BOWES NORTH'D FUS: James BOWES enlisted into the 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers in 1889 and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa arriving in the Cape in late November 1899. The Fusiliers were immediately pressed into action in an attempt to capture the defences at Stormberg. Due to a combination of fierce Boer fighting and a catalogue of errors in planning the assault the Fusiliers had to retreat suffering nearly 400 casualties. Pte BOWES survived the action and the shattered remnants of the battalion were withdrawn. Unfortunately their next taste of action as part of General Clements Brigade was a disaster. In December 1900 the brigade were encamped at Nooitgedacht Pass in the Megaliesberg Mountains. The Fusiliers were holding the ridges overlooking the camp on 13th december when they were surrounded by a large Boer force and captured. The fusiliers suffered 100 killed and wounded in the defence with 13 men mentioned in dispatches for gallantry. It was during this action that PTE BOWES was captured and made a prisoner of war. Comes with confirmation from casualty roll and also 9 pages of his service record.
