Rare & All-original Vintage Halloween Full-bodied Pulp Cat Lantern, 1920s-1930s:
Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique
Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts!
Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and
antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique
dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware.
For your all-year-long Hallowe’en-loving pleasure we are HAUNTINGly happy to present a PURRRRfectly wonderful hard-to-find pressed paper pulp cat lantern from the 1920s or the 1930s. This kitty comes straight out of our personal collection.
Please meet the lovely Gwyneth! This is by far one of Ziz’s favorite pieces, and Gwyneth was the very first full-bodied cat lantern she was ever able to acquire. Gwyneth is in all-original condition with her golden tan and warm orange paint, black highlights, fabulous paper insert creating her oh-so-SPOOKY expression and she retains her original wire bale handle as well.
This kitty has warm and outstanding aged patina! This comes onlyfrom the many All Hallows' Eves that she has seen. She measures 6 ½” high x 7” long x 4” wide.
This decoration was used to create asuper-SCARY feel for at least one of her families on at least one Hallowe'en since she does have a little white wax in her interior – and frankly Ziz loves to see this! Believe it or not, back in the day, lanterns such as Gwyneth were lit using real wax candles. GASP! Gwyneth is indeed a survivor.
Her exact condition is as follows: there is some paint wear, one bent ear tip, a little damage to the tip of her tail and some tears to her original paper insert. Please see photos. Notice her light-to-darker coloring, which is original and helps to accentuate that great patina we spoke of earlier.
One similar to Gwyneth can be seen on page 133 of “Hallowe'en in America – Second Edition” written by Stuart Schneider. Although Mr. Schneider attributes this lantern as being made circa 1940, it is Ziz’s opinion that this piece was made earlier. Kitties such as Gwyneth came in solid black as well as in golden tan and orange with black highlights. The cat itself came in two different iterations: our version, with triangle shaped eyes, and another version that came with round eyes. Also, and interesting to note, the paper insert came in different iterations as well. Gwyneth’s insert is multi-colored and is in shades of bright pink, soft green, medium blue and black. Although Gwyneth is unmarked, Ziz believes that she was most likely made by F. N. Burt.
Gwyneth is, in our opinion, a true hard-to-find treasure and would make a MAGICally magnificent addition to any Hallowe'en lover’s collection!
Please remember Ziz’s motto: Eat, Drink and Be Scary!

Oh, there’ll be spooky doings
When cometh Hallowe'en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghost slyly prowl.
Happy Hallowe'en 2013!
