RARE 12-15th CENTURY RUSSIAN ORTHODOX SMALL BRONZE CROSS PENDANT \"FLEUR-DE-LIS\" :
$79.00

Rare, ancient Orthodox smaller Cross pendant featuring Orthodox \"Krinos\" or \"fleur-de-lis\" (lily flowers) design with a solid necklace bale/loop. Origin likely c. 12th-15th century Ryazan region of Russia (based on the identified similar artifacts). Rarely well preserved, ancient, antique condition. Cast from bronze or similar copper alloy, bears marks from hand-grinding tools (files). The cross is worn out according to its age and covered with beautiful original dark green- to brown patina from the past centuries. Authentic antique symbol of late medieval Orthodox Christianity.
The crossbar ends are shaped as simplified fleur-de-lis (\"krinos\" in the Orthodox tradition), or lily flowers, symbols of purity and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Similar images appears in the history quite early: Roman Gaulish coins show the first Western designs which look similarly to modern fleur-de-lis. A 9th-century mosaic from San Giovanni church in Rome shows Saint Peter handling the Oriflamme, the imperial banner, to Charlemagne. The finial of the oriflamme is clearly a spearhead, like the earliest depictions of the fleur-de-lis, on the seals of Robert II (circa 1000 AD) and Phillip II (c. 1180).
