Miniature editions of the Bible and Thumb Bibles form genres of their own among miniature books. The two differ in that miniature edition Bibles contain all or selections from one of the standard versions of the Bible.

Miniature "Thumb Bibles", on the other hand, are paraphrases prepared chiefly for children. Epitomes of the story of the Bible were intended to provide early religious instruction for children not yet thought old enough to address the Bible itself. Such minuscule “Bibles” found a ready audience among children, but were also popular among women and all those interested in “curiosities.”

Elegantly engraved illustrations in Thumb Bibles along with their curiously small size made them highly desirable both then and now.

Thumb Bibles saw at the beginning of the start of seventeenth century their earliest progenitors being John Weever's An Agnus Dei (1601) and John Taylor's Verbum Sempiternum and Salvator Mundi (1614).

John Taylor states, as reprinted in the earliest known American Thumb Bible (1765), "With care and pains out of the Sacred book, / This little Abstract for thee have took: / And with great reverence have I cull'd from thence, / All things that are of Greatest consequence."

Although, Du Bois takes full credit for this versified Thumb Bible it is extensively derived by John Taylor's Verbum Sempiternum and Salvator Mundi (1614).

OF SIGNIFICANT NOTE

This book was respectively produced and then printed during and just after the reign of William IV, Prince of Orange and Nassau-Dietz, the first hereditary Stadtholder of the Netherlands. Many of these prints were virtually unknown until 1952 when, according to an article in The Miniature Book Collector, several copies mysteriously came up for sale. The article goes on to say that a Dutch antique dealer had found a box full of these minute books in a collection of antiques he had bought. He sold the whole group of books, but "later regretted having done so as the sight of the tiny volumes in his window had brought him many curious customers" The books described in the article and in Houghton were similarly bound in fine Moroccan Leather and decorated with gilt ornamentation.

As stated above these texts have sold for upwards of $10,000+++
