This copy has the provenance of ownership of William Ashmead Courtenay, mayor of Charleston, SC (1879-1887). Courtenay also served in General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia as a soldier in Joseph B. Kershaw's brigade in General James Longstreet's corps (Company B, 8th South Carolina Infantry). He fought at First Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. Courtenay's bookplate is on the front pastedown of each volume.
A First Edition of the first book to obtain an American copyright in 1785. Howes R36.
