RARE 1829 DATED AND SIGNED STEEPLE CHASE PIECED QUILT INDIGO BLUE AND OLIVE GREEN

92\" x 91-1/2\"

SIMPLYWONDERFUL

Amongthe choicest of old time quilt designs is this pieced STEEPLE CHASE with indigo blue and olive green prints and saw tooth border. This quilt is avisual vintage beauty.

The quilt is totally hand pieced and handquilted with printsfrom the 1820\'s.

SIGNED AND DATED 1829 and outline signature and dated stitched in red cotton in longhand, Mary Rex 1827or 1829at foot of quilt.

Condition: Few smallspots, very good condition. Few shattered pieces. Back was originallycovered with two lapis prints, now revised with 2 little \'windowpanes\'. Susan Greene made in 2001. Suedates to 1825 on inner material. Pictures just do not show the olive green.

Heavily quilting stitching, throughout at9stitches per inch. The stitches are precise and consistent. and the batting is thin.

This quilt is a wonderful sewn together work of art.Quilter put a lot of thought into the selections of materials to give thequilt a great visual look.

PROVENANCE :

The provenance is very solid. I bought a collection0f 18 quilts from Susan Greene. Susan Greene just finished her book\"WEARABLE PRINTS\" 1760-1860. THIS IS FROM HER COLLECTION.

With eachitem I purchased came her letterhead with description, condition, age and somecame with info where she purchased it. I purchased the book some time agobefore she had the book published, and when I acquired the quilts, many of theprints are in the book. Susan lives about 45 minutes from my home and haveknown her for many years.

She has travelled the east coast going to all themuseum for photographing their collection for the book as well as doingseminars on textiles as well as showing these quilts in her talks to showpeople attending the seminars on identification of prints and fabrics fromdifferent time period. Mrs. Greene used this quilt in her presentations as wellas fabric example photographs in her book.

I have not listed all the quilts yet on .

A great addition to one\'s collection and a hard to find quilt from this time period that has survived.

I have listed other antique quilts in my store. Click on below BLUE link to view.
