Book Description
Good, but soiled, publisher’s original dark blue blind-stamped cloth with titles in gilt on spine. Gilt titling still very bright.
Some marks to the front and rear covers. Wear to the edges and corners of the front and rear covers. Slight wear to the tail of spine.
Both front and rear free endpapers missing. Front and rear paste-downs browned/toned and small piece torn away from top right hand corner of the rear paste-down. Library label on front paste-down and library stamp on reverse side of the frontispiece map. Library stamp on Page 1, Page 81 and Page 105. The stamp on Page 81 and Page 105 are partly on the text.
Title page and Introduction page heavily foxed. Light foxing on Pages 127 - 180.
Otherwise the text is free of other foxing, marks or other blemishes.
About this Book
The opening few give a brief history of the Ottoman Empire and especially the relations between Turkey and Russia.
The rest of the book deals with the government, religion, the manners and customs of the Turkish people, including the Greeks, Armenians and Chaldeans, statistics of the resources of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey’s Balkan provinces, the Turkish language etc.
The coloured folding map of the Bosphorus, including Constantinople, Pera and Scutari is in very good condition.
This book was published at the time of the Crimean War when interest in Turkey was very high in England.
This now a scarce book.
About the Author:
John Reynell Morell was a C19th English historian. He also wrote books about the history of Russia, France, Greece and Algeria.
