Confederate civil war letter.This letter is in good shape for its age.No rips,tears but 3 pinhead size holes in the fold lines due to silverfish damage also some yellowing/staining. Letter is from a soldier William Henry Harrison Tyson from Chatham County, North Carolina. Enlisted April 15th 1861 at age 30 with the Chatham Rifles.They were attached to Co.M 5th North Carolina Volunteers. In Nov 1861 they were redesignated the 15th North Carolina Troops Co. M. On July 4th, 1862 company transferred to second Co. I 32nd North Carolina Troops.They kept the name "The Chatham Rifles" through out the war. Appointed 2nd Lieut. May 2nd 1862.Wounded July 1st,1862 at Malvern Hill,Virginia.Appointed 1st Lieut. July,4th 1862.Present and accounted for until July 8th 1863 when he was wounded accidently. He lost 3 fingers on his right hand. May have been due to a inspection of a loaded musket. Returned to duty on December 31st 1863. Promoted to Captain May 1864. Resigned March 7th 1865 reason not reported. This letter does not give a location or date at the top like most letters do but at the end of the letter it gives a location of Richmond to send all letters to. As far as the date he states in this letter that he is a 2nd Lieut. which makes it between May 2nd 1862-July 4th 1862.This letter is to another Confederate soldier J.M. Edwards who was in the same regiment but at home after being sick/wounded. Letter opens by saying "I will try to write you a few lines I hope you will be well but I hope you will be at home when you get this. From that fact that I do wish any friend of mine to have to go through what we have to bear now. John, you know nothing about hard times. J.M. Saunders has been sick for the last two weeks but is now better. We have but twenty privates for duty in our company. The sick is in Petersburg and Richmond. We have to submit to consumption or conscription ? it is a rough pill to take. London is our capt., ? is first lieutenant, myself second, Jim Rogers third. We are now picketing all the time. We have nothing to eat and nothing to cook in the whole peninsula from Yorktown to Richmond. John, get all the men you can to come to our company. Tell doctor Hedgepeth to come with you. I have seen lots of yankees. Our lines have been from two to eight hundred yards apart. The soldiers on each side devils each other. The yankees ask men how they like consumption or conscription?. There are good many of them marching to Richmond every day. J.M. Saunders says bring him one pair of pants, two shirts, cotton. Cotton he prefers. I hope we will get the chance to come home some time in the summer. George is sick. A.J. Riggsbee is dead. He died in Petersburg. Tell John Fox I think we have no difficulty in his staying at home sometimes yet. Write to me to Richmond, VA 15th NC Troops General Cobbs Brigade care of Captain W.L. London. Give my love to all inquiring friends. Tell them to write to me. One box of clothing is at Morrisville. Lieutenant W.H. Tyson." This would make a great addition to anyone's collection.
