Rare 1903 Massachusetts Porcelain License Plate Pair 03 Ma Mass Auto Register Pr For Sale
In 1903 Massachusetts became the first State to actually supply license plates to registrants, rather than having the registrant supply his own tags. Every serious collector, sooner or later wants to have and 1903 Mass Auto Register. Offered here without reserve is a rare pair of Massachusetts Automobile Register s. Number 2623 was first issued in 1903. Both plates were manufactured by Baltimore Enamel & Novelty Co, the Porcelain Sign maker. The 1906 and 1907 listings show that the plates were issued to an 8 HP Knox, owned by Nelson Beckworth of Somerville. The plate without the slots shown at the top of picture number 1 and in pictures 2 & 3, was manufactured in 1903. Its original mate was apparently lost or damaged and a replacement was manufactured in June of 1905. That is the plate with slots shown at the bottom of picture 1 and also shown in pictures 4 & 5. Note the figures 6 5 fired into the back of this plate indicating the June 1905 manufacturing date. Both plates have been touched up, chiefly around the corners and edges, although here and there the touch up gets into the informational content.
